Chapter 17

My father lay in his bed talking to my uncle the day after the fight. My father ’s victim had a record already and had been charged with possession for a sixth time. Being pulled out of a car and getting beaten up for being a jerk was the least of his worries.

My father ’s bruising and swelling had fully matured making his face look like a lumpy plum. He could barely see between his swollen eyelids. His ribs had been wrapped and his cuts taped.

My uncle looked worried.

“I think it’s time to explain to Sara what is wrong with you, because honestly we are running out of excuses,”

My father was frustrated. “I thought by now this part of my life would be over. I have been doing everything right.”

“I know, Thomas, I know, but she needs to know and the sooner the better because it seems to be getting worse. She was so scared yesterday. Do you have any idea what kind of trauma you are causing Sara? She thinks her daddy is turning into some cruel violent man.”

“Well, I’m stuck here until Elliot gets back, so can you bring Sara here for me this evening along with Corinne. I want to tell her around people that love her, so she knows she is not alone in dealing with this.”

“What about this Dr. Pirelli Elliot had me call?”

“That would be Laura and she doesn’t believe in any of this,” my father started to explain.

“Oh, I understand better than you know, Mr. Walling,” said Laura, walking into the room with his record in hand.

“I’m not going to talk to you. Elliot will be back in less than a week.”

“Trust me, you need to talk to me. I think part of your problem is Dr. Scott hasn’t looked outside of the box in your treatment.” She laid her bag down on the empty bed in the room.

“You don’t even believe there is anything wrong with me. You’re just like my father was when I was a kid.”

Laura smiled at my uncle. “Hello, Officer Clancy, it’s nice to see you again.”

My uncle smiled a little not knowing what to say.

“I do believe you, Thomas, now we just have to figure out what to do. So I talked to my father who did this for thirty-three years and he is reviewing the tape I found in Dr. Scott’s file he keeps on you along with your history. I’m hoping he has some ideas,” she said proudly.

My father looked up at her confused, “So, is your father my doctor or are you?”

“A little of both, you see Dr. Pope, your old psychiatrist actually got advice from my father, on your case which is how my dad knows who you are. He did try to get your case from Dr. Scott after I told him the crazy story of our date and he went to talk to him remembering you from years before. It’s a small world, when you throw such a rare condition into the pot,” explained Laura sounding chipper.
